Women and Wildlife Photography

Writer's picture: lexienewlexienew

I've seen a lot recently about women and wildlife Photography. Mainly press releases and articles entitled something like "Where are all the women wildlife photographers?" or "Why are there so few women in wildlife photography?"

We're out there! I promise. Often people are so disbelieving when they see my photographs, "you really took this?" is a common thing to hear. Society thinks that Wildlife Photography is a male profession, and it is very male dominated but why shouldn't women be in that profession.

The articles I mentioned earlier have tried to give reasons why there are less women, the vulnerability of being in an isolated area alone, the heavy kit or clothing required that is 'not made in women's sizes'. To me it all seems like excuses.

Wildlife photography isn't about going on expensive trips to Africa or the Arctic, or places that may not be kind to women traveling alone. It's about doing what you love. There are plenty of fantastic, illusive species in Britain, often within a stones throw of your front door.

They key is to not let anything stop you from living your dreams, no matter what or who stands in your way.

There are some exceptional women working in wildlife photography, winning awards, being ambassadors and doing what they love.

By the way -->

that's me, doing what I love. Photo by Phil
