A break in the rain

Writer's picture: lexienewlexienew

So far, this year seems to have been mainly rain, and if it's not raining then its really windy!

As soon as the weather started to look better, I had to get out and do some photography. Sunrise on Friday looked like it was going to be amazing - clear skies & virtually no wind - who could say no to that! With the alarm set for 5.30am I was very optimistic about this session.

I thought I would stay local today and headed to a nearby Torquay Beach, Meadfoot.

Situated just north of Torquay town centre, this part shingle part sand beach points due East, perfect for sunrise. I headed down the steps and set myself up on the beach just after 6am - the blue hour. Before the sun has risen, you get some fantastic light, and this morning didn't disappoint. With pink tinges to the clouds and the beginning of an orange glow behind the headland, I reached for the filters!

Here I experimented with a Neutral density filter, allowing me to achieve the milky water effect seen below.

Sunrise, Meadfoot Beach, Torquay, Devon, Sea, Rock, beach, sand, water, waves
Sunrise at Thatchers Rock, Torquay, Devon ~ 24mm, f/8, 40 second exposure, 200ISO 10Stop ND filter

I stayed at the beach for over an hour, watching the sky change from pink to orange as the sun rose over the headland bathing everything in glorious golden light.

I'm looking forward to more beautiful sunrises and sunsets as hopefully the weather continues to get better.
